Welcome to the Waikiki resort hotel – redefined.

THE MODERN HONOLULU doesn’t resemble other Waikiki beach hotels, or even other Waikiki luxury hotels. Our design, extending to every room and suite, is a study in white, in sleek minimalism – a tableau that magnifies your views of the Pacific, the Waikiki skyline, the yacht harbor or our lush resort grounds, depending on your desire. The feel is organic luxury, as refined as it is relaxed: Natural light and the outside world filter in as you wish via gauzy fabric and teak louvers that slide over large-scale windows (many of our accommodations also feature private terraces). Varied woods and Terrazzo marble spa bathrooms complement the palette of whites, which washes over everything from lounge-like settees to upholstered headboards on beds blanketed in imported premium linens, offset by color-saturated iconic images of the Pacific. Every element is custom-designed for THE MODERN HONOLULU, making it one of the best hotels in Honolulu.

All that’s left to do is make it yours. Which accommodation at THE MODERN HONOLULU is your custom-fit: a guest room glimpsing the city and the ocean? A studio or one-bedroom suite that invites an entourage? Perhaps our ultimate indulgence – THE MODERN HONOLULU Penthouse Suite – where anything is possible? Let us spoil you with our details, personalized service and an unmatched set of amenities – uncommon among Waikiki hotels.

Note:To introduce a new product line to enhance your future stay, The Modern Honolulu will be undergoing room design renovations and upgrades starting January 3, 2020 through December 31, 2020. During the renovation, construction will be isolated by floors to reduce noise. We expect minimal impact to our guests and their experience at The Modern Honolulu.

October 28, 2019 through March 1, 2020 the Sunset Pool located on the 2nd floor will be closed for renovations. The Sunrise Pool located on the 1st floor will have normal operating hours from 7:00 am – 9:00 pm.

"Great Location, comfortable rooms. A few changes would take it from very good to great."

The Modern is in a great Waikiki location. Not right in the middle of all the bustle and noise but close enough that one can easily access stores and restaurants. The rooms are spacious and light with platform beds. The wifi is quite strong. There are two pools (although one was closed during my visit). The sunrise pool is lovely, especially during the late afternoon and early evening. There are a few things that if modified would improve the 'visit experience'. First check in is painfully slow. Most rental car agreements do not require as many signatures and legalese as The Modern's check in procedure. Secondly, the hotel should standardize its 'happy hour' times. The different happy hours at different hotel bars is confusing and can result in bills at non-happy hour rates that are very high. Lastly, the hotel provides two 500 ml bottles of water in each room upon check in. It does not matter whether one is staying 1 night or 1 week - 2 bottles. This is a ridiculous policy and the staff acknowledges that it makes no sense. Housekeeping should replenish the water as the bottles are used up. Food in the restaurants tends to be a bit pricey (it is a hotel after all), but there is a great pub across the street (Harbor Pub and Pizza) which serves a decent breakfast, makes terrific pizzas, salads and sandwiches and is moderately priced.

Room not ready for nearly two hours, even though we arrived after checkin time. Front desk was suppose to call when room was ready..never did. No compensation was offered. Stay away. Room was super tiny and not so clean. Housekeeping was hit or miss, as in some days they missed us. Total crap.

"Great Club Vibe/Horrible Hotel"

We booked 2 nights at the Modern at the tail end of our trip since we were on the red-eye flying home on the Sunday and wanted to have a good night's sleep on the Saturday and a nap before heading to the airport. We knew there was a lounge in the lobby, but were not told that it turned into a night club on weekends. Our entire room was vibrating with music until well after 3am, and we were on the 7th floor! No other rooms available to move us, so none of us could fall asleep until almost 4am. It was a horrible way to end our family vacation in Honolulu. We stayed at the Modern about 5 years ago and it was a beautiful hotel. Not any more. It clearly has not been maintained as the luxury resort it once was.

Like many others, I was repelled by the aggressive timeshare sales pitch cloaked in a saccharine phone call to your room inviting you to come to concierge desk for “your gift.” Ha. My overpriced “view” room overlooked ‘closed pool as sad puddle’ with peeling paint encircled by yellow plastic “stay away” tape like police use for crime sites (see photo). As others found, the Keurig coffeemaker in room is not replenished daily with supplies. That’s on you, bro. Restroom at pool level (the pool that was still functioning) was “out of order.” Checkout time is an aggressive 10am (!) but even then housekeeping knocks on your door a few minutes early to roust you out. Resort fee tacked on is for amenities that amount to next to nothing. The stampede to exit at 10am checkout resulting in clogged elevators did NOT prevent a Modern employee (looked like management level) from cramming himself onboard our car instead of saying he’d take the next one when he saw ours was stuffed to the gills. I guess this place was nice awhile ago when it still had a notable restaurant and different ownership but now... buyer beware.

"Great location, not great service"

Great location, was easy walking to place getting on and off busses etc. Close to the beach. Was annoying they only offered people discounts to anything you wanted to so if you sat in a conference where theyd try and sell you shares!! Staff on the first day where great but other than that not great service.
