L’Antica Pizzeria da Michele in Los Angeles

No trip to Los Angeles is complete without stopping by the historic pizzeria, L’antica Pizzeria da Michele. Known for its authentic Neapolitan style Margherita and marinara pizza, this pizza parlor is an experience like no other.

L’antica Pizzeria da Michele originated in Naples, Italy, in 1870 and arrived in Los Angeles in the spring of 2019. The Los Angeles restaurant was the first U.S. franchise of the historic pizzeria. In addition to Italy, the famed pizzeria, called ‘the sacred temple of pizza,’ has locations in Japan, Great Britain, Spain, and Dubai.

Located in the heart of Hollywood, near Sunset Boulevard, L’antica serves traditional pies in an airy indoor-outdoor space and issues numbered tickets to diners to ensure that the restaurant doesn’t get too busy.

Restaurateur Francesco Zimone first acquired the rights for the LA eatery then partnered with Michele Rubini, who trained in Naples. The two expanded the menu to include salad, pasta, breakfast items, and appetizers such as gnocco fritta and grilled octopus. L’antica also serves beer, wine, and cocktails.

Still one of the oldest and best pizzerias in Naples, the original L’Antica Pizzeria da Michele only sold two pizzas – marinara or Margherita. Writer Elizabeth Gilbert praised the Naples pizzeria in her book, ‘Eat, Pray, Love.’ She claimed the pizza was so good 'it made her lose her mind.'

Considered the first and oldest pizzeria in the world, Naples native Michele Condurro, son of Salvatore, perfected the family art of pizza making back in the late 1870s, which experts believe is preparing and kneading the dough, then cooking the pizza. The secret of his success, which he carried out through five generations, was only to use natural ingredients and apply the old tradition of leavening the dough.
