Hawksbill Mountain in Asheville

North Carolina's Hawksbill Mountain Summit provides magnificent views of the Linville Gorge Canyon and the Appalachian Ridgeline.

The Hawksbill Mountain Trail leading up to the Hawksbill Mountain Summit (4,090 feet) is a 1.5-mile round trip hike near Jonas Ridge, North Carolina. With an elevation gain of 700 feet, the trek is considered moderate but steep and rocky in sections, so is not recommended for small children.

With 360-degree panoramic views of gorgeous wilderness, beautiful wildflowers, and stunning fir trees, the exciting hike is well worth the climb. The summit overlook offers clear views of Grandfather Mountain to the north and Mount Mitchell to the south.

If you feel ambitious, you can also climb the summit adjacent to Hawksbill at Table Rock Mountain. This hike is two miles roundtrip and provides excellent views of the Pisgah National Forest.

The extraordinary views from the Hawksbill summit are sure to delight the masses. In addition, the northeast section of the Linville Gorge features numerous trails that originate from the Jonas Ridge that can combine with other hikes. Also, the nearby Sitting Bear Mountain and Celestial point also offer incredible scenic look-outs, and a peek at the beautiful Linville River.

Visitors are allowed to camp anywhere in the Linville Gorge area and the nearby Lake James State Park. But the park requires permits at certain times of the year.

The amazing Shenandoah National Park’s inspiring lookouts and waterfalls feature natural vistas and forests. Hikers should cross the famed Appalachian Trail, which runs through the park extending from Maine to Georgia.

The fall months are the perfect time to capture the gorge’s beautiful autumn colors and foliage. However, the trail is accessible year-round. This trail does allow canine friends, but they must be kept on a leash.
