Description

from Winter Whale Watching Adventure by Flagship
Each year approximately 20,000 gray whales migrate from the Bering Sea to the lagoons of Baja California and back again. From December through April you can witness this amazing journey off the coast of San Diego on educational whale watching excursions with Flagship Cruises & Events and our partner of over 14 years, Birch Aquarium. According to our partner, optimum whale migration viewing times are late December through January during the southward migration.

Flagship Cruises & Events along with Birch Aquarium is proud to provide two types of whale watching experiences, both leaving daily from the San Diego Harbor. Whichever one you choose, you will have an experience of a lifetime!

Join Birch Aquarium naturalists and Flagship Cruises & Events as we venture out for twice-daily cruises to locate gray whales on their annual round trip migration from December through April. Get a close-up look and learn about gray whale baleen, barnacles, and prey items from the naturalists during the 3.5 hour tour.

Crunched for Time?
A new addition to our fleet is our High Speed Jet Boat, the Patriot. The Patriot will take you out to see the majestic whales and other marine life such as seals, sea lions, migrating birds, and more in half the time!

We saw gray whales and dolphins. Boarding and departure were timely, staff very courteous and informative. And the ocean was so calm that day. Everything just went really smooth.

Make sure to ride it! It is amazing. We took our bikes on board for free! And biked all over Coronado island. Then hung out at the beautiful beach.

Great time every one was so nice. And we were given lots of information about the whales. And when we did see them the ship was steered towards them.

"Valentine’s dinner cruise"
TripAdvisor user rating 3 out of 5

It was roughly $100 per person for the Valentine’s dinner cruise which is not bad however be prepared to sit with another couple unless you pay extra to sit by yourself. It was pretty good food the steak was amazing and it was a nice time. I would definitely recommend at least once for the experience. I won’t be paying that much for next years v-day dinner to share the table with someone else and they didn’t even tell us until we boarded the ship and sat down that it was going to happen. The couple we were with was very nice don’t get me wrong and it would’ve been great on any other day but v-day is the day you want to be alone and with your partner you know.

"Why didn’t we do this Whale Watch cruise before!"

Excellent in every way. Even the whales showed up on time where guides and crew took us. Volunteer guides from Birch Aquarium were excellent. Husbands bad knee was problematic at times in the swells or when I switched sides to view whales. Crew was always there to assist me. Boat even has sea sickness pills should you need them. Snacks and drinks available A great bargain tour at modest cost. Boat left in time and returning likewise. Parking available at nearby public lot alongside Midway aircraft carrier

How far will we cruise into the ocean?
In the beginning of the season, the southbound whales swim closer to the coast, so the maximum distance is about 3-5 miles. Toward the end of the season, when the northbound whales swim further out, we can cruise up to 9-12 miles off the coast.

Can I touch the whales?
No.
Should I make reservations?
Yes. Reservations are strongly recommended due to the popularity of this tour. There is the chance we will sell out on busy days, especially on the weekends.
