I prefer unique charming hotels to franchised/chain properties. This is a small, unique hotel in a great downtown location in a converted old building. The rooms are small, but clean and comfortable. The staff is very friendly and welcoming. Some unique features of this hotel include free dog treats for canine guests in the lobby and free yoga classes.

I booked at the Sofia on recommendation of Historic Hotels of America - a source I will not trust on its won again w/o further investigation. The shell of this hotel is historic but that's as far as it goes. The decor is hideous - ultra modern but of poor quality, drab and dull. The staff is very nice and accommodating but there is not a trace of grandeur or any semblance of class once inside the lobby and beyond.

Worst experience EVER!! Not only did housekeeping do a lousy job, but they continuously removed the extra pillows & blankets every day (we were there for 3 nights). By far the WORST part was when we added an additional night & upgraded room to a King Suite - 1.) We got put in an OCCUPIED ROOM - can u imagine if the people were in their room when we barge in unannounced?! :/ 2.) My hotel receipts weren’t given to me until I had to call & request them because the charges weren’t adding up. (Come to find out they charged me an extra $22 for booking thru them plus another $22 for Guest services fees! Are you serious??? My AC was completely ridiculous 1st night then they put me in an Occupied Suite & I had to wait in the hallway until new room was found (NO EXPLANATION was ever given for ANY of their mistakes!!) and had to go to lobby 3 times to get working room keys! Total Disaster! BEST PART of Hotel was Restaurant & Bar Manager, Max! Great drinks, bar menu & friendly atmosphere! ENTIRE hotel staff (with exception of SUPER NICE Valet Workers) needs to go - Completely Unprofessional & Non-Apologetic. AVOID HOTEL but ENJOY BAR! :)

Hotel in an older building near the federal courthouses. An easy walk to the Gaslamp quarter. Rooms are a little small, but clean and comfortable. Staff is very friendly. I did not try the restaurant/bar, but it looked inviting from the lobby.
