"Detailed review of this well-located, efficiently-run business hotel that is ideal for exploring the Gaslamp District"
TripAdvisor user rating 5.0 out of 5
Reviewed January 14, 2025 NEW
We wanted to be in the Gaslamp District on a particular weekend for a birthday celebration. There were many choices and we ended up choosing this particular Westin due to its proximity to the birthday party venue and its good reviews on TripAdvisor. We were very happy with our choice as detailed further below, with a couple of service issues noted. First, the hotel is well-located for many activities in the area. Aside from the activities in Gaslamp, the hotel is less than a mile (less than 20 minute walk) to Petco Park to the southeast or the Harbor Area (e.g., USS Midway Museum) to the west. Second, parking is $60 valet-only. Steep but par for the area. Fortunately, Gaslamp has scores of bars and restaurants, and if driving in, you will not have to take your car out in order to enjoy the area. Third, we reserved a basic King and due to my Gold Bonvoy status, were upgraded to a Premium King, which I believe was a bit larger and on a higher floor. Our room had a nice city view. The room had the standard amenities of a safe, coffee maker, mini-fridge, large flat-screen TV, desk, upholstered chair, and ottoman. Complimentary waters were provided. The room was quiet and seemed to have been updated. Fourth, our status was also recognized when the efficient and cheerful front desk clerk provided us a boxed gift with branded Bonvoy items: a collapsable water bottle, a toiletry bag, and a collapsable backpack. I don't know whether this is a standard gift item, something special for the holidays, or just leftover Bonvoy items provided to premium guests until they run out. In any event, it was a nice surprise. Fifth, one should note that the hotel is located adjacent to the former Horton Plaza Shopping Center which was abandoned several years ago. The Center is being repurposed (mixed use?) but is still not reopened. This means that there are large gated-off areas that prevent one from walking freely around the hotel and have a construction-zone appearance. Sixth, the hotel charges a $25 + tax amenity fee. A number of supposed benefits come with the fee, some of which would come standard with the room charge in the good ol' days (e.g., WiFi, fitness room access, etc.). The Westin does provide a card that outlines more benefits, such as two free wine or beer drinks at the bar, and a harbor cruise. We were told that the drinks could be redeemed for coffee drinks at the coffee stand so we did that. The clerk at the coffee stand could have been more friendly but he did fulfill out coffee/tea drink order as requested. Since we checked in early evening one day and were departing the next, we didn't have time to go on the harbor cruise. But the front desk clerk told us that there is no expiration date for the cruise tickets so she suggested we get them from the concierge and save them for another visit to San Diego. When we went to the concierge desk the following day, the concierge was a bit snippy, saying that those tickets are typically not supposed to be given out on the day of checkout. I pointed out that no one was at the concierge desk when we checked in, and since there is no expiration date on the tickets, it shouldn't matter when we get the tickets. She made a big show of making an exception for us before handing over the tickets. I thought this was an unnecessary and false step in customer service, and suggest that it be reviewed by management.

I have been in the hotel, resort, spa & cruise industry for over 35 years. I am fortunate to travel on a regular basis. My family stayed this past Christmas at the Westin Gaslamp. It is a fantastic property, in a fantastic location with a fantastic team. A special shout-out to Terese, the Front Desk Manager. Terese went above and beyond in helping my wife with a few matters. We plan on visiting again in a few months when my daughter is on Spring Break. Highly recommended.
