San Diego Zoo Safari Park: Featured Exhibits

February 20, 2015

San Diego Safari Park is a sprawling animal paradise.

Located north of San Diego, in Escondido, the park packs a lot of animal attractions on its 1,800-acre preserve.  Curious about which natural exhibits are here? Read on to find out.

African Outpost

Headquarters for safari tours, the highlight here is the lightning-fast cheetah. Cheetah Run, an animal showcase, is held daily at 3:30pm and highly recommended.

African Plains

By far the largest Safari Park exhibit, elephants, rhinos, giraffes, gazelles, and zebras roam in open-range enclosures. To view all the animals from Africa’s diverse regions, hop on the Africa Tram. It’s included with your San Diego Zoo Safari Park tickets, and it’s the easiest way to see these animals up-close.

Asian Savanna

Multiple species of deer, Indian rhinoceros, and antelope are a few of the animals representing the Asian Continent.

Condor Ridge

Once on the brink of extinction, the Safari Park’s successful captive breeding program has started reintroduced these native California birds to the wild in 1991. This is one of the only places in the world you can view them in captivity.

Elephant Valley

An African Elephant herd can be seen from a shady viewing area or from the Elephant Viewing platform. A giant watering-hole plus elephant trunks make for lively entertainment, too. Several births have occurred, too, so be on the lookout for a baby.

Gorilla Forest

A lush habitat and plenty of toys make the gorillas here lively and fun to watch. The older gorillas are typically more stoic, but the young ones love to play. An open-air fence gives unobstructed views of the animals too.

Lion Camp

Nicely themed, the Lion Camp typically houses around 15 African lions. An expansive 40-foot viewing window provides the best views, but walk the path to see lions resting on a Land Rover or heated rocks.

Nairobi Village

Numerous small animals call this village home.  Among them are meerkats, lemurs, an African aviary, flamingos and shoebill storks.  The best part, though, is the nursery.  Baby lions and gorillas are generally on display, and they are oh-so-cute!

Tiger Territory

There are three exhibits showcasing the world’s largest carnivore. View them outside their massive enclosure, up-close through a viewing window or climb up to the viewing platform for an aerial view.

These are the featured exhibits at San Diego Zoo Safari Park. Other animals call this natural reserve home, too. Visit the Safari Park and explore the diverse display of animals on your California vacation.
