Wondering just what makes Hamilton so magical? Before you make a beeline for the Richard Rodgers Theatre, let us give you some backstory on this saga of scandal, love, and political turmoil.

Lin Manuel Miranda’s work is a biographical musical that chronicles the life and times of the first Treasury head Alexander Hamilton. Based on the 2004 biography by Ron Chernow, Lin’s play is both sung and rapped. His explosive work of U.S. history specifically cast nonwhite actors in order to tell the story of America then, as it is now.

The original Hamilton Broadway cast production had Lin in the title role and Leslie Odom Jr. as Aaron Burr. Hamilton was headed by director Thomas Kail and features orchestrations by Alex Lacamoire.

This hip-hop and R&B-based extravaganza would go on to win 11 Tony Awards and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. In addition, the play would garner seven Olivier awards, including Best Theater Choreographer for Andy Blankenbuehler.
