The Best Rooftop Bars in New York City

September 28, 2015

Rooftop bars in New York City are a must for any visitor whether you prefer the hotel rooftops in Times Square or the spots in the glamorous Meatpacking District in Manhattan known for its night life.

The city has hundreds of rooftop bars from classy to cozy and nothing beats sipping a cocktail while gazing at gorgeous views. Here's a sample of some of the best rooftop bars in New York City. Some places are only open seasonally through November, weather permitting. Others are open year-round. So be sure to check before heading up to the roof.

1) Metro Grill
One of the best things about this rooftop bar that sits atop Hotel Metro at 45 W. 35th St. in midtown Manhattan is its "head-on" view of the Empire State Building which is just a block away. Much of this charming rooftop with its awesome décor is covered by awnings, which means that you can still enjoy the perks of drinking outdoors, even if the weather's not cooperating. You'll head up to this delightful spot in a neat little elevator that takes you to the Penthouse floor. If you're in the mood for a relaxed setting, this is the place to stop in for a cocktail.

Perched on top of the Hotel Americano, this roof top bar features a pool turned hot tub in the winter, specialty cocktails, and great views. Take an external glass elevator to the 10th floor and you'll enjoy panoramic views of the skyline and Hudson River.

DJ's are occasionally spinning and it’s a delightful spot just a little before dusk to catch the sun setting on the river. The hotel is located at 518 West 27th St. in the heart of Chelsea, a neighborhood just west of Broadway surrounded by art galleries and exhibits. It’s a perfect place no matter what the weather.

This classy rooftop bar high atop the Kimberly Hotel at 145 E. 50th St., in midtown Manhattan has comfortable couches, and romantic lighting. It features a gorgeous view of the Chrysler Building - the Art Deco skyscraper that looms above - from the 30th floor. A cozy rooftop with a classy atmosphere, this lovely terrace is open year-round with a retractable roof, heated flooring and an outdoor patio with its own fireplace to enjoy. The patio light bulbs add a nice touch. It usually draws after-work young professionals on the weekdays, but the weekends bring in a more diverse crowd along with some tourists.

4) Loopy Doopy Rooftop Bar
This is absolutely one of my favorite places. If you've come to New York to get a good look at the most amazing views of the city, this is the spot for you. A hidden gem, there's no other rooftop bar like this in the city. Located on the 16th Floor of the Conrad Hotel at 102 N. End. Ave. you'll enjoy fabulous views of the Statue of Liberty, the Hudson River and New York City harbor, making it awesome at sunset. Loopy Doopy serves a variety of unique cocktails. Try the Prosecco Pina Colada ice pop. It's a great choice. The bar's most popular drink is the Boozy Ice Pop cocktail, a fruity People's Pop ice pop topped with chilled Prosecco. Popular flavors are Blueberry peach, Strawberry Lemongrass and Empire Apple. The rooftop terrace is open through November, weather permitting.

Gaze at the Manhattan skyline from across the East River at this unique 3,000-square foot roof deck at 4 Berry St. in Brooklyn between 13th St. and Nassau Ave. A massive warehouse recently renovated, the bar features a retractable glass roof, so it's an ideal spot to hang out when it's sunny or raining. A fun place with a dance floor, it gets pretty crowded every Friday and Saturday evening and there's no cover charge. Berry Park also offers a huge screen to watch NFL or Soccer games as well as other huge sporting events. It's a popular place with good drinks, a great atmosphere and reasonable prices.

For awesome views overlooking Staten Island and the four bridges attached to it, this is the place to go. Located on the 9th floor of the Hilton Garden Inn at 1100 South Ave. in Bloomfield, this popular hot spot is one of the only rooftops in Staten Island. The bar features high decorated ceilings, an eye-catching bar and an outdoor terrace surrounding the room that just adds to the atmosphere. You can enjoy the magnificent view outside sitting by a fire pit. One of the only rooftops in Staten Island, the bar has Saturday night DJ nights, a wide range of cocktails, food and more. It's a nice place to party!

Many of these rooftops can get crowded fast on the weekends, so it's best to head up during the week.
