Helical Trace

LUMA Hotel offers a brilliant gift to everyone passing by the corner of Third and Channel Streets. And now, celebrated local artist Jim Campbell has designed a stunning, site-specific dynamic light installation that graces the hotel’s lobby and can be admired through floor-to-ceiling three-story windows.

Known for his masterpiece Day For Night atop the Salesforce Tower, Campbell’s latest creation appears uniquely different from every perspective and utilizes window reflections to magnify its movement. The ethereal figures ascend an endless waterfall, enabling Campbell to transform physical struggle into a captivating beauty.

The Wind Baffles

At The Parks at 5M, the distinctive wind baffle structures are a masterpiece by the acclaimed urban design firm !melk. Nestled in the bustling SOMA District of San Francisco, these structures serve dual purposes.

Firstly, they efficiently mitigate wind, ensuring a comfortable environment. Secondly, they are brilliantly illuminated at night, transforming into stunning light sculptures. Crafted from steel, these baffles might seem hefty, but their design is reminiscent of delicate flowers with intricate stem and leaf patterns. As night falls, their perforated upper sections emit a soft, enchanting glow, making them appear almost weightless.

Point Cloud: Point Cloud, an impressive light art installation by renowned artist Leo Villareal, is located on the pedestrian bridge linking the north and south buildings of The Moscone Center. Villareal, who also created The Bay Lights on the Bay Bridge, has designed this 100-foot marvel using 858 steel rods and 28,288 LED lights.

Each LED bulb is individually programmed to change colors every 30 seconds, creating a mesmerizing light display. You can either stroll across the bridge during The Moscone Center’s open hours or admire the dynamic light installation from street level on Howard St to enjoy one of the most anticipated highlights of the Light Festival Bay area.

Peace in the Middle East: Taravat Talepasand’s “Peace in the Middle East” has made a triumphant return as a permanent fixture in the Grand Lobby of YBCA. Suspended from the ceiling, this detailed neon piece, which spells out “peace” in Farsi, delves into the cultural taboos surrounding gender and political authority, seen through Talepasand’s unique perspective as an Iranian-American woman.

Love Over Rules: Standing tall at 6-foot-6-inches, the illuminated letters “LOVE OVER RULES” shine brightly on the exterior wall of the Salma Family Building, nestled in San Francisco’s Yerba Buena neighborhood. Tucked away in an alley off Mission Street, this light sculpture marks the first permanent public art piece in the United States by New York-based artist Hank Willis Thomas.

This poignant LED installation is a heartfelt tribute to Thomas’s cousin, who tragically lost his life in 2000. The blinking white neon letters convey his cousin’s final message to Thomas. Each word is given its own line, sparking contemplation: is it “LOVE OVER RULES” or “LOVE OVERRULES?”

Day for Night: Perched atop the towering Salesforce Tower, the tallest structure west of the Mississippi, is Day for Night, an awe-inspiring light art installation by Jim Campbell. This dynamic display of Light SF features a sheath of 11,000 lights and video screens, presenting mesmerizing scenes of city life that shine through the night.

White Light: Located in the vibrant Salesforce Transit Center, Jenny Holzer’s White Light captivates both commuters and visitors. This brilliant 182-foot-long LED screen showcases the profound words of over 40 writers. Some messages flash briefly for just 45 seconds, while others remain displayed for up to two hours, offering moments of inspiration to all who pass by.

Language of the Birds: Language of the Birds is a permanent, site-specific sculpture that beautifully connects Chinatown and North Beach. This engaging installation of Illum SF features suspended “books” that mimic birds in different stages of flight, with the pages and bindings forming their wings.
