"A gem in San Diego"

I took my youngest son to the USS Midway museum. The team there have done a fantastic job of bringing this WWII ship to life. It's not a dusty relic from the past, its a living, breathing memorial to the daily lives and heroism of oir service members at a key moment in history.

"USS Midway has something for everyone"
January 2026 NEW
This had a lot to see, all the way from the upper to the lower decks. When we came there was a long line but it moved quickly. The upper decks let you actually go through and see inside some of the planes. There are past military service people who present on various topics and you can speak with. The family and I thought that was fun in and of itself but then we went below decks and that was where the real magic of the USS Midway came to life. The interactive parts of the exhibit are well thought out and help bring the past to life. There is a lot for children and adults to enjoy, even a simulation where you can play out a high-stress situation as if you are military personnel on a top secret mission. That was definitely a highlight of our trip here.

Tip: Definitely check out the lower decks

"?????????? An Incredible Experience Aboard the USS Midway!"
October 2025
We spent about 4 hours exploring the USS Midway Museum, and it was such a fun and memorable experience! The ship is absolutely massive, and there’s so much to see that you could easily spend an entire day here.
We did the self-guided audio tour, which I highly recommend—it really brings the history of the ship to life with stories from the actual sailors who served on board. Every section had fascinating details, from the engine rooms to the flight deck.
One of the highlights for us was the special tour on top of the flight deck, where we got to see the captain’s room, the captain’s bridge, and the air operations center. It was incredible to stand where so much history took place and to learn how everything worked during active duty.
The volunteers and docents were fantastic—knowledgeable, friendly, and clearly passionate about sharing the ship’s story.
If you’re in San Diego, the USS Midway is an absolute must-visit. Whether you’re a history buff, an aviation enthusiast, or just looking for something unique to do, this museum offers an unforgettable experience. Don’t forget your camera and comfortable shoes—you’ll want time to explore every deck!

There is lots of climbing up and down stairs so not really good for people with poor mobility ...they do have elevators but not sure how much of the ship you can assess as we walked and climbed :)

"Plan to be there the entire day"
January 2025
Parking was easy right in front of the ship. You can easily go back out to your car to eat or enjoy their cafe on the ship. I believe we walked over 3 miles and took 14 flights of stairs. They are more like ladders. Some of the docents can talk a lot, others don't talk much at all. You really need to explore because there are many areas that you might miss. The recommended 4-5 hours wasn't enough time for us.
