To make the most of your trip to the Top of the Rock NYC, we’ve answered some of the most frequently asked questions about this attraction.
When should I visit the Top of the Rock Observation Deck?
There is no time is better than dusk. Arrive in time to see the city in sunlight, then watch as the sunsets and the lights of the city sparkle. You really get to see it all if you time it right. The second best time is any time after dark, as the view of the Empire State Building is the best in the city.
Should I reserve Top of the Rock tickets in advance?
Yes! Tickets for the Top of the Rock Observation Deck are timed so you can choose to pick the perfect time for your visit. This ticket is ideal as you get to skip the ticket lines (for purchase and redemption) and head straight to the top. However, if you’re unsure of the exact time of your visit, you can still reserve a ticket and then redeem it for the time of your choice upon arrival. Note that you most likely will be given a time several hours away, so don’t plan on going at the time of redemption unless it’s the slow season. We highly recommend redeeming your voucher in advance of your actual desired time to have the best experience.

It’s important to note sunset is the most popular time to visit Top of the Rock NYC. As such, tickets timed for a sunset entry are $10 more per person.
There is also a Sun and Stars ticket option available. It allows for entry twice in one day ($54/Adult, $43 Child), and for just $11 more you can add a 75-minute tour of Rockefeller Center.
When is Top of the Rock NYC open?
The observation deck is open 365 days a year, from 8:30 am to midnight. However, the last elevator goes up at 11:00 pm so plan accordingly.
Where is Top of the Rock NYC located?
Top of the Rock is literally at the top of 30 Rockefeller Center. Enter on West 50th Street, between 5thand 6th avenues. A ticket counter is located on the bottom level. If you already have tickets (with a specific time), you can skip the line and head straight to the top.
Is it easy to take the subway to Top of the Rock NYC?
Yes. Don’t be afraid to take the subway in New York City. It’s generally much faster than a Taxi (due to traffic) and a lot less expensive. Plus, it’s part of the NYC experience. The nearest subway is the B, D, F, M lines to 47-50th Street Station. To plan your subway trip, use Hop Stop. It’ll give you the closest station near you, then tell you which line to ride to Rockefeller Center.
How long should I plan for my visit?
Plan for about an hour at the top. You’ll want plenty of times to take photos, enjoy the view and see the sights from both the observation deck and the open-air top deck.
Where are the best picturing taking spots?
For the best photos, be sure to visit the open-air top deck. There are no security fences or windows here, so there is nothing to obstruct your lens.
What are family-friendly visitor tips?
Kids will enjoy the Target Breezeway. The motion-detection technology tracks visitor movements, with the color changing as you move. Pretty neat! It’s also important to note kids six and under are free. This can be a great savings for families with little ones. If you have older kids, be sure to print out a landmark worksheet from Top of the Rock website. Then, when you’re at the observation deck, you can have fun finding all of the different landmarks.
