Leading up to the thrilling race, the Iditarod Trail Committee is delighted to present a special Musher Meet and Greet event. Make sure to pick up a signature Jeff Schultz poster, or bring your gear for autographs.

The event is also a way to honor important figures like Leonhard Seppala, whose crucial contribution during the historic Nome Serum Run etched his name in the annals of Iditarod history.

Iditarod Mushers Banquet 2024

Then, engulf yourself in a celebratory ambience with delectable dinner and drinks to inaugurate the 52nd anniversary of The Last Great Race on Earth. Like before, all proceeds from this fundraiser will play an invaluable role towards the smooth execution of the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race®. Entry opens at 5:30 pm.

The Ceremonial Start

Riding a wave of tradition and vibrant cheer, the ceremonial beginning in Anchorage unfolds in a sparkling festivity. The teams meander around the heart of Anchorage over a laid-back 11-mile circuit, providing plenty of moments to capture and cheer for beloved mushers.

The event also takes the chance to revisit the history of Iditarod, starting with acknowledging the birth of this trail-blazing event that can be traced back to a woman named Dorothy Page. Her fiery passion for sledgedog racing ignited the spark that eventually transformed into the spectacular Iditarod. Successful champions like Susan Butcher and Doug Swingley will be mentioned as they have made significant contributions to enhancing the event’s prestige. It will revisit the recognition of the historical and cultural significance of the Iditarod was acknowledged in 1978 when it was officially declared as one of the national historic trails.

Of course, the recognition of Joe Redington Sr, the man rightfully known as the father of the Iditarod. His relentless advocacy for dog sleds in Alaska was instrumental in stimulating interest and excitement for the sport. This led to the formation of the legendary Iditarod sled dog race that we know.

If you’re considering driving to the event, you’ll be pleased to hear that complimentary street parking is available throughout downtown from 6:00 pm onwards. Alternatively, if you prefer, you can make use of one of the paid parking lots located conveniently close to Anchorage.
