About Bishop Museum Hawaii

Dive deep into Hawaii’s beauty, heritage, and legacy when you visit the island’s largest museum and premier natural and cultural institution. Founded in 1889 by Charles Reed Bishop, this edifice of education was dedicated to honoring his late philanthropic wife, Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop.

The charitable princess was a descendant of the royal King Kamehameha and had left many family heirlooms to the museum. Over time the museum’s extensive collection grew to include millions of artifacts, objects, and photographs relating to Native Hawaiian culture. Today the museum has expanded to include a Science Adventure Center and over 14 million entomological species.
