Description

Before the world turned Upside Down, Hawkins was just a quiet town with everyday worries. Stranger Things: The First Shadow on Broadway transports audiences to 1959 Indiana, where young Henry Creel arrives in search of a fresh start. But when strange events begin to unfold, the darkness that will define Hawkins for decades starts to take shape.

This suspense-filled Broadway prequel to Netflix’s Stranger Things introduces early versions of Jim Hopper, Joyce Maldonado, and Bob Newby. Written by Kate Trefry from a story by the Duffer Brothers and Jack Thorne, and directed by three-time Tony Award® winner Stephen Daldry alongside Justin Martin, the production delivers an intense mix of mystery, emotion, and supernatural intrigue—all elevated by inventive stagecraft.

Featuring a standout cast—including West End star Louis McCartney—and immersive effects, The First Shadow is a Broadway experience unlike any other. Critics call it "a non-stop thrill ride" (Deadline) and "a jaw-dropping, must-see theatrical marvel" (Entertainment Weekly).

Whether you're a lifelong Stranger Things fan or exploring Hawkins for the first time, The First Shadow delivers emotional depth, suspense, and spectacle.

Now playing at the Marquis Theatre on Broadway in the heart of Times Square, this immersive production offers a limited-time opportunity to witness how it all began.

A must see broadway show. From start to finish it was amazing. Both my partner and I were fully engrossed the full show. The actors were outstanding and the effects were out of this world. It is by far the best broadway show I have seen. I would highly recommend to anyone. It doesn’t matter if you’ve seen stranger things on tv, you can still follow the story as it is just a similar idea. 1000000/10

One of the Most Visually Astonishing Productions I’ve Ever Seen Stranger Things: The First Shadow – Marquis Theatre, NYC My journey to this show started long before I took my seat at the Marquis Theatre. I spent six unexpected hours stranded at Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport, navigating rolling delays, crowded gates, and a terminal full of restless travelers. When my flight finally took off, I landed at LaGuardia, rushed onto the Q70 bus, jumped to the subway, and made a flat-out sprint to my hotel just to drop my bags. With minutes to spare, I pushed through Times Square and slid into the theatre just in the nick of time. And somehow — the show made every chaotic minute worth it. A Production on a Completely Different Level Stranger Things: The First Shadow delivers something I did not think was possible on stage. The production feels cinematic, but alive — the type of theatre that makes the entire audience lean forward at once. This isn’t a simple prequel. It’s the origin story the TV series always hinted at but never had the canvas to paint. Standout Elements • Visuals: The stagecraft is astonishing. Seamless transitions, impossible effects, and illusions I still can’t explain. At times it felt like watching a blockbuster unfold in real time. • Performances: The actor playing Henry Creel is a revelation — unsettling, magnetic, completely in control of the room. His physicality and vocal choices were so precise that I genuinely forgot I was watching an actor. Young Joyce was another standout, delivering warmth and grounded emotion that anchored the chaos around her. • Key Moments: Without giving spoilers: • The Act I finale involving Dr. Brenner left the entire audience frozen. • Patty’s scene was heartbreaking and brilliantly executed. • The final moments — revealing Eleven — were pitch-perfect and exactly what long-time fans hoped for. Story Notes (No Spoilers) I went in thinking Henry Creel was simply “born bad.” The play adds nuance: if what happens to him in Nevada is truly out of his control, we’re looking at a tragic rewrite of a person’s entire being — not a simple villain arc. The show invites that debate, and I appreciated the complexity. What Surprised Me Most I expected nostalgia. I got something richer, darker, and more emotionally layered — a production that raises the bar for franchise theatre. I’ve seen a lot of stage work, and this ranks among the top visual experiences of my life. After a difficult travel day, unpredictable transit, and barely making curtain, this show didn’t just save the night — it became the highlight of my entire trip. If you’re in NYC, this is absolutely worth your time.

Took the family to NYC to enjoy a day trip after Thanksgiving. The adult kids picked this broadway show to watch. We haven’t watched a broadway show for a while so the excitement is real. The show was not a disappointment, it was almost full in the theater. The audience was really immersed into the action. The effect is so real and sometimes a bit scary. Although the sound effects were a bit too loud and my watch reminded me several times that I had to pause for the day. So all the characters are great and deserve a standing ovation.
