Description

From the creative team behind the Tony Award-winning In The Heights comes a wildly inventive new musical about the scrappy young immigrant who forever changed America: Alexander Hamilton.

Tony, Grammy, and Emmy Award winner Lin-Manuel Miranda wields his pen and takes the stage as the unlikely founding father determined to make his mark on a new nation as hungry and ambitious as he is. From bastard orphan to Washington's right-hand man, rebel to war hero, loving husband caught in the country's first sex scandal to Treasury head who made an untrusting world believe in the American economy, HAMILTON is an exploration of a political mastermind.

George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Eliza Hamilton, and lifelong Hamilton friend and foe Aaron Burr all attend this revolutionary tale of America’s fiery past told through the sounds of the ever-changing nation we’ve become.
Tony Award nominee Thomas Kail directs this new musical about taking your shot, speaking your mind, and turning the world upside down.

This show is approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes, including intermission. Recommended for ages 10 and up. Children under the age of 4 are not permitted in the theatre.

"Hamilton is a mix of important past history with a modern musical takeaway."

We had heard much about Hamilton, written by Lin-Manuel Miranda. Some people absolutely adored it and others were dead-set against it as they either didn't like nor understand rap. If you are not familiar with the story, you should review your background in American history as this series of events let our country to break away from Great Britain and seek independence. Once achieved, the constitution had to be written which pitted Northern entrepreneurs against Southern plantation owners and their representation in Congress based on the number of slaves owned. Hamilton was brilliant and set up the national banking system and fought for the Electoral college with its decentralized system of electors chosen in each state as he felt this would help prevent powerful factions or foreign powers from manipulating the election of the president. Say what you will about him, I feel that he had the interests of our new nation at heart and tried to be objective in dealing with various issues that had arisen. He was shot and later died in a duel with Aaron Burr in New Jersey where dueling was still a legal method of settling disputes. The play also revolves around the Schuyler sisters and dalliances with them. Once you understand the history behind this masterpiece, you will understand the play. If possible, try to see the movie on demand in advance of seeing the play. Also, try to obtain the lyrics; Miranda's writing is masterful. This will help you significantly to navigate understanding what is occurring in this docudrama musical. Hamilton is housed at the beautiful Richard Rogers Theater. I heartily recommend Hamilton to you. Once you understand the history, you will absolutely enjoy the play.

It is a good show but not commensurate with the wave of hype it is surfing on. The dramaturgy in my opinion is not very skillful.
