SeaWorld San Diego Debuts Shark Encounter May 2026

If you’ve ever watched a shark documentary and thought, “Okay, but I want to be dramatically near that,” SeaWorld San Diego has news for your itinerary.

📍 Location: SeaWorld San Diego

📅 Start Date: May 22, 2026

🎟 Admission: Included with park admission; optional upgrade available for a shark-feeding experience

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Ideal For: Families, ocean lovers, animal enthusiasts, and anyone who wants an “I walked under sharks” brag

What’s New

Shark Encounter is a redesigned, interactive shark habitat that aims to pull you into a full ocean journey—from bright, sandy coastline vibes all the way into deep-water drama.

First, you’ll enter through a newly designed entrance framed with lush foliage that opens into a beachy coastal scene. From there, the exhibit transitions as you move deeper inside, shifting your perspective from above-water viewing to underwater immersion.

You will be able to see 11 different shark species, including sand tiger sharks, blacktip reef sharks, and the endangered Australian leopard shark. Along the route, you’ll also find educational signage, fun facts, and photo opportunities that focus on shark behavior, habitats, and conservation. In other words, you’ll leave with more than just camera roll content.

One headline-worthy twist: this is the only shark exhibit on the West Coast where you can upgrade your visit for a one-of-a-kind chance to feed a variety of large shark species right over the water. If you’ve ever wanted a story that starts with “So there I was… holding shark food,” this is your moment.

SeaWorld Pass Members also get exclusive early access on select dates before opening day.

Highlights

  • A full “shore-to-deep-sea” walkthrough that changes environments as you go
  • Above-water shark viewing at the start, with beach-style surroundings and learning spots
