We visited two plantations on our trip to New Orleans, and this one was our favourite of the two. Our guide, Sylvia, kindly greeted us for what turned out to be a private tour. She was so lovely and very knowledgeable. She answered any questions we had and more. We were also allowed to take photos inside the home, which was not permitted at the other tour we had previously finished. It was a great experience for us that we would highly recommend.

This is a great plantation to visit. Mike gave me an excellent and informative tour. I learned about the families that lived there and about the house and about sugar growing and processing. Both the interior and the exterior of the house are very well preserved and kept up. The grounds are also well kept up and there are several old original buildings. The furnishings are old and from what I was told, several are original to the house. I have been to several of the plantations in the area, and this is my favorite, and no crowd from tour busses.

St. Joseph Plantation is not a museum. It is the story of people who have lived and worked this land for generations, and still do! There are some 20th century updates (ceiling fans, for example) to the house which help tell the story and give a picture of a home that the antiques alone could never do. Hannah was extremely knowledgeable and enthusiastically shared her enthusiasm for St. Joseph. Don't miss the series of "sugar kettles" that were used in the processing of the sugar cane!
