Description

Trace the path of Kilauea’s lava flows, from the 1881 eruption to the dramatic events of 2018. Begin the journey across Saddle Road, nestled between Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa — two of the tallest and most massive volcanoes on Earth. Along the way, a National Park Service–certified guide provides insight into the region’s volcanology, geology, and history, explaining the evolution of the landscape and the native flora and fauna that thrive here.

Continue to Kaumana Caves, part of the lava tube system that once carried molten rock to within 1.5 miles of downtown Hilo. Step inside the cathedral-like cavern, then take a scenic drive through Hilo’s historic waterfront before stopping at the KapohoKine Adventures store to gather supplies. From here, travel toward Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, where the 2018 eruption transformed the land.

After a picnic-style lunch surrounded by native bird calls, set out on the Halemaumau Trail for a three-mile hike through an ever-changing volcanic landscape. The historic trail, established in 1846, leads from Volcano House down to the caldera floor, dramatically reshaped by the 2018 eruption. Follow paths once used by famous visitors such as Mark Twain, guided long ago by native guide Alex Lancaster. Walk among ancient tree ferns and look for native birds including the yellow amakihi and red apapane.

At the base of Kilauea Caldera, see the immense Halemaumau Crater — now over 1,000 feet deep after the lava lake drained during the eruption. Skirt the caldera’s edge, crossing hardened lava fields and spotting resilient ohia lehua trees reclaiming the terrain. The ascent to Byron Ledge climbs roughly 400 feet in half a mile, rewarding hikers with sweeping views of the caldera floor and its slowly refilling lava pit.

Continue along a gentler forest path toward Waldron Overlook for glimpses of Puu Puai and Kilauea Iki. Conclude the trek along the old Crater Rim Drive, now being overtaken by vegetation, returning to Volcano House for a moment of rest and reflection.

The day continues with visits to additional volcanic landmarks, including the Mauna Ulu lava flows, where glassy Pele’s tears glimmer in the hardened rock, and the Nahuku lava tube hidden in the rainforest. End the adventure with a satisfying dinner at a favorite local restaurant in Volcano Village — and, if conditions allow, witness the glowing lava illuminating the night sky.
