Description

Greeting the sunrise in Haleakala National Park ranks among the most popular activities on Maui. Witness what might be the most breathtaking sunrise on Earth with the guidance of professional, local experts on the Haleakala Sunrise Tour.

For nearly 150 years, visitors to Maui have ascended Haleakala to witness the marvel attributed to the demi-god Maui. However, over a millennium before these early explorers, Haleakala was revered as sacred by the Hawaiians. Known as wao akua, or “realm of the gods,” the summit of Haleakala was approached only when absolutely necessary and solely by specific individuals such as kapuna (“priests”). Discover the unique significance and purpose of Haleakala’s animals, plants, and rocks.

Join as they delve into the narratives of this mystical land. Be inspired by the park’s landscape and immerse oneself in the sacredness of Haleakala’s summit.

Okay, first of all, the staff are fine. What's missing/not really explained from the advertisements and subliminal marketing of the beautiful sunrise and colors and clouds is: 1. You have to wake up at 1-2am...so for most people, you won't get enough sleep and you'll feel like sh*t. 2. There is NO RESTROOM on the shuttle, so after you get picked up, you will not be able to pee until the first rest stop which is about 3 HOURS from pickup...I was holding my pee the whole time and it sucked. If you do this, pee before you go! 3. It is really, really, really cold. The ride itself is a little bumpy and again, you are cold, half asleep, and needing to pee half the time. Then when you get there, #4, it is still really cold. They have you stand at the "prime" spot, but you have to stand there for 30-45 minutes until the sunrise actually starts, and again, you are standing in the cold. Granted, they give you a blanket, but it's still a somewhat miserable experience. Then you finally see the sunrise, which is okay, but honestly, it's just another sunrise just like anywhere else. Not that special. I mean, it's beautiful, just like any sunrise is, but it's not AS beautiful as all the photos suggest. Then finally, that's over and done with and they shuttle you to a breakfast place for a mediocre breakfast and then finally back to your hotel. They send you more of the beautiful photos you've probably seen, the same ones that probably hooked you into booking in the first place, in order to try to basically cover up the miserable memories of being cold and tired and the sunrise not being as great as you thought it'd be. Overall, I would not suggest this trip. For the money you spend on this, better to spend it elsewhere. It's just not worth it and the whole experience is kind of miserable tbh. The other aspect that doesn't get mentioned is that b/c you basically didn't get a full night's sleep the night before, when you get back to your hotel, you are wiped out and need to rest for the rest of the day, so this one tour effectively takes 1.5 days out of your precious vacation time. Having done this, I'd recommend avoiding it.

"Sunrise Tour Was Somewhat Disappointing"
TripAdvisor user rating 4.0 out of 5

We did the GetYourGuide Haleakala National Park Sunrise Tour, and while the tour itself was wonderful, the sunrise was disappointing. About 20 minutes before sunrise, a giant cloud consumed the side of the mountain we were on and lasted well into the sunrise, making it impossible to see the sunrise. Once the sun had fully risen, the cloud dissipated and it was really pretty, but that was 15-20 minutes after sunrise. It was so disappointing to wake up at 1:30 AM and spend 2 hours driving to the summit for that to happen. That being said, it wasn't the fault of the tour or our tour guide, Michael, at all! He still made the trip so very special for us. He was so organized, informative, and courteous. He also brought us gloves, space blankets, and some heating pads to make sitting outside in the cold somewhat durable. The national park itself is absolutely beautiful, and having someone drive us up the mountain was worth it.
