"⭐☆☆☆☆ Terrible Experience — the Worst “4-Star” Hotel I’ve Ever Stayed In"
TripAdvisor user rating 1.0 out of 5
Reviewed October 25, 2025 NEW
I’ve travelled extensively around the world and can honestly say that The Godfrey Hotel in Chicago is the worst four-star hotel I’ve ever stayed in. From start to finish, the experience has been shockingly poor. The staff are unfriendly, unhelpful, and at times outright rude. There’s no sense of hospitality or warmth — just indifference. The rooms themselves are cold (literally cold — the heating barely works), and despite advertising daily housekeeping, our room was never cleaned. We left the hotel at 9 a.m. and returned around 3 p.m. hoping to rest and recover from jet lag, only to find the room exactly as we’d left it: unmade bed, dirty towels, trash still in the bins. When we called reception to complain, the response was simply, “We’ll send someone now.” That meant we couldn’t rest, couldn’t nap, and our whole plan for the afternoon was ruined while we waited for someone to finally come clean. This hotel completely fails to deliver on even the most basic expectations of comfort or service. Save yourself the frustration — there are much better places in Chicago for the same or even less money. I would never stay here again and would strongly recommend others avoid it.

"LH and HU were AMAZING upon arrival."
TripAdvisor user rating 5.0 out of 5

My initial experience at the Godfrey Hotel started with the enticing aroma upon entry. The lobby is decorated very stylish and the lobby bar/restaurant is quaint and inviting. Checking in I had the pleasure of meeting with LH and HU, both of these individuals greeted me with a smile and were extremely polite. They welcomed me to the Godfrey by informing me of the many amenities available, presented me with keys to my room and even provided suggestions of places to visit for lunch. They patiently answered all my questions and were extremely friendly and professional. They both presented themselves and the Godfrey with outstanding hospitality and customer service. They made traveling solo seamlessly easy and comforting. This location is absolutely perfect. Only a few blocks from Michigan Avenue for the shopping enthusiasts. The neighborhood is beautiful and has anything within walking distance that you could possibly want. I’ve traveled all over the world and this is absolutely the cleanest city I’ve ever visited. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming. Everyone is friendly and excited to share their city by offering suggestions for places to visit and providing directions. I plan to make visiting here an annual tradition as it has so much to offer for anyone. Don’t hesitate in booking the Godfrey, ask for LH and HU for a superb experience and tell them Stephanie sent you.

"Never again"

We went for a wedding. A block of rooms were reserved for family and friends. We parked in the hotel parking garage. Someone on the hotel staff spilled an entire liquor cart in the elevator and it dripped on us as we were waiting for the elevator. The hotel had 1 working elevator for 16 floors of guests. The elevator closed on us before we could get in. Had to wait another 10 minutes for the elevator to work its way down. The room was fine other than the a/c not working. Engineering came at 11:30 pm to fix the a/c. Said it’s all fixed except it wasn’t. We were on the 7th floor which is no big deal except the phone in the room didn’t work. So we just dealt with the heat. The mattress was too soft. I sweated so bad the sheets were soaking. If you want a restful sleep it won’t happen here. People were talking all night in the hall of our floor. We didn’t sleep at all.

I had the absolute best time at this hotel. Although it was only for 2 nights, I would definitely stay again. Beautiful hotel, inside and out. They allowed me to check in early so that way I would not have to wander around town with my luggage

"Not worth the hype"
TripAdvisor user rating 3.0 out of 5
Reviewed August 18, 2025
While the roof top bar was nice, it lacked either a DJ or different music i was there for 3 nights eventually went to another hotel ..... The elevators were loud i was stuck in the elevator on 3 occasions once when I first arrived. Stuck in between floors very scary and completely unsafe. Yes there was someone there to repair the first he was on the elevator WITH ME yet the job apparently was not complete....very unsafe VERY LOUD. The rooms were small, based on the price totally not worth it. One good thing, all of the employees were kind and always willing to help. Simply not worth the hype, I will not visit again.
