History
-From Sweet Potatoes to Macadamia Nuts-
The Nutridge House is located inside of the Pu'u 'Ualaka'a Wayside Park, in the heart of Tantalus. In the Hawaiian language, the name of the state park refers to a crop that was once grown here. "Pu'u Ualaka'a'' literally means "rolling sweet potato hill.'' Under King Kamehameha I, Maliki-Tantalus forest was cleared and planted with sweet potato, giving it its name.

In 1921 a man named Ernest Shelton Van Tassel was granted the lease by the Territory of Hawaii to begin planting Australian macadamia nut trees on the 22 acres of land within the Pu'u 'Ualaka'a Wayside Park creating Hawaii Macadamia Nut Ltd., the island's first macadamia nut plantation. At its height, the company had approximately 2,000 macadamia nut trees growing in the Nutridge grove.

"Unique cultural Dining and Show Experience"

This is a complete dining and cultural experience. The trip out of the concrete jungle to the real jungle of Hawaii is magical and the views are breathtaking driving the cliff hanging curvy roads. Arrive at the former Macadamia Farm and be greeted with a true Hawaiian traditional Welcome. Be Escorted to outdoor seating to listen to a interesting and educational lecture of the true Hawaiian ways of food preparation and information about our beautiful surroundings encompassing this former Macadamia nut farm. Be led down a short path into the jungle to now experience a Hawaiian dancers and flame thrower dancer show. After this cocktails are served on the patio with activities like spear throwing Macadamia nut cracking and bracelets making of leafs. Then dinner buffet is provided. On the menu are authentic dishes of pulled pork teriyaki chicken salad rice sweet potato pineapple and deserts. But is us not over yet. After dinner be treated to beautiful Hawaiian hula dancers and comedy from the host. Then be invited to learn a hula dance with the guests on stage. Loads of fun and good food. A wonderful experience. TIP bring light shawl or sweater. It may get chilly into the evening. Casual dress is fine. It’s the jungle...there may be brief sprinkles of rain😁. This is a rustic jungle setting with beautiful mountainside views of the lights of the city. Ladies do not wear high heels! Bring camera!

We had a mates 50th here and the experience was amazing... the guys put on a great show for all of us and made us feel like a family member. They also taught us a great deal about the Hawaii culture and the food was amazing as well. I also lost my sunglasses in an activity and the guys brought it back to my hotel which was really great of them to do that. So overall this was a wonderful experience for me and my kids and the rest of the party

"Great Family Experience"

This was an awesome experience. The staff was great and extremely hospitable. Beautiful property and views. We loved learning about the Hawaiian culture. At other luau experiences it's always been Polynesian culture focused so this was nice to learn about the Hawaiian culture. Highly recommend.

This is a wonderful experience. We were picked up in a large van from a location one block from our hotel in downtown Honolulu. Even though we had a car it was wise to have them do the driving .....the roads are narrow and winding and the parking at the property limited. We stopped at a lovely vista on the way up to see a view of the city and ocean.......really lovely. Upon arrival we were greeted by a welcoming ceremony that was traditional. We learned about the property, the trees, the crops and lots about Hawaiian culture. We wrapped sweet potatoes in ti leaves for cooking as Hawaiians have for years. There were several interactive activities (making bracelets from leaves, husking and shelling macadamia nuts, and a game that’s a cross between bowling and croquet). There was lots of hula dancers by several beautiful and talented women who also helped with serving the food and with the activities. Cousin Reno kept things moving with informative and funny commentary. Food was delicious and filling. It’s a small group with an intimate family feel and by the end of the evening we were all cousins. I would have a late lunch on the day one goes as food was served toward the end of the experience. I would let them do the driving (especially since the mai tais are so good), and I would not miss this very special luau experience.
