History
-From Sweet Potatoes to Macadamia Nuts-
The Nutridge House is located inside of the Pu'u ' Ualaka'a Wayside Park, in the heart of Tantalus. In the Hawaiian language, the name of the state park refers to a crop that was once grown here. "Pu'u Ualaka'a" literally means "rolling sweet potato hill." Under King Kamehameha I, Maliki-Tantalus forest was cleared and planted with sweet potato, giving it its name.

In 1921 a man named Ernest Shelton Van Tassel was granted the lease by the Territory of Hawaii to begin planting Australian macadamia nut trees on the 22 acres of land within the Pu'u ' Ualaka'a Wayside Park creating Hawaii Macadamia Nut Ltd., the island's first macadamia nut plantation. At its height, the company had approximately 2,000 macadamia nut trees growing in the Nutridge grove.

"Outstanding Evening Experience"

Our evening was everything that the reviews shared and the Nutridge Experience truly deserves its #1 rating. The small group allows for hands on experiences, sharing and learning, all done in a very entertaining way. Our hosts, as they shared early on, were very much like family. The venue is incredible with the most outstanding views of Waikiki. It was more than we could have asked for. A truly enjoyable evening from start to finish.

"Best experience on the island"

We attended a luau at Nutridge last weekend. My daughter's gymnastics team was in town for a meet and they accommodated us as a private group. I went in expecting a traditional luau with lots of people, dancing and a buffet of local food. This was completely different than I was expecting, in the best way possible. The location is stunning - it's at the top of a mountain overlooking Waikiki. The weather was wet and windy but the porch area was enclosed in a tent and we barely noticed the weather. The grounds are incredibly beautiful as well. The guides explained to us that they wanted to welcome us into their family and treat us as if we were part of their family. At first I wasn't so sure, but by the end of the night, I felt as though I had been invited to their family's backyard party. They gave us a ton of information on their culture and traditions and invited us to be part of it all. They showed us how to prepare traditional food, and gave us a hands on lesson where we all prepared our own sweet potatoes. There was dancing including a fire dance and they showed us how to do local crafts, play traditional games, etc. It was so intimate and they took the time to get to know us. The hosts were incredibly warm and it felt so much more personal than any other large luau I've been to. The food was amazing. I have a food allergy and they accommodated me perfectly. At the end of the night, WE got to dance. They showed the girls how to hula and then played some fun songs that got everyone onto the dance floor. I would highly recommend this experience to anyone!! They delivered on their promise that they made as we walked in... we definitely felt as though we left as Ohana.

"The most magical experience of our trip!"

There are no words to express how amazing this experience was. My husband and I visited Hawaii on a cruise and wanted to participate in an authentic luau. We were so excited when we discovered Nutridge. We organized a private luau with our shipmates on Cruise Critic. The evening was more magical than we’d even imagined. The setting itself is simply breathtaking. The whole experience was very intimate and personal. We learned about Hawaiian culture and laughed all night. We even got to learn about and help prepare a part of the traditional meal. The staff were so warm and welcoming and it truly felt like we were at a family gathering. We experienced the culture through dance, music, demonstrations, activities, and humor. A beautiful integration of learning and entertainment. I can’t recommend Nutridge highly enough as it is an experience not a show. Simply put you are a participant not an observer. It was our very favorite part of our cruise and we will never ever forget this experience. Thank you Kai for working so hard with me to organize a very special night for our group. I know many share our sentiments. Mahalo nui loa for the memories!

"The Best!"

The experience was fabulous. The warmth of the staff makes everyone feel like family. The master of ceremonies, Reno, does a tremendous job both educating and entertaining. The food was wonderful and satisfying. Overall, it felt very authentic and much closer to a real Hawaiian experience as opposed to a just a ‘show’ that I’ve seen it at other Luau’s.

"A rare five star rating...."

Let me be clear...if you are looking for a lavish stage production then this is not for you. If you prefer to spend your evening being herded like cattle through buffet lines with a couple of hundred other people then go elsewhere. On the other hand if you would like to enjoy a relaxing evening with no more than 50 people in a stunning outdoor location with amazing views then give Nutridge a go. The feel of this luau is more of a casual backyard BBQ where people mingle and get to know each other in an idyllic setting. The staff did a great job of presenting heritage, customs, and culture in a fun and entertaining manner. The food was quite tasty as well and a cash bar. The only complaint that I have about my time at Nutridge is that I had to leave. Everyone really did a great job trying to make us feel like family and I must tell you that I miss my new ohana every day..... Thank you Nutridge for a truly remarkable experience.....
