We had visited this hotel in 2019 and 2021 and loved it! The concept is great, a clean hotel in a great location to explore Gatlinburg while giving the kids plenty of activities in the waterpark to stay entertained. Unfortunately, upon arrival we let the kids go to the pool. After 1 hour they were both complaining of headaches and inabilty to breath normally. I could barely stay in the pool area for more than a few minutes without a headache myself. It was so bad that returning to fresh air in the lobby felt like hot chlorine was running down my sinuses into my lungs. I can only imagine how kids felt swimming in it for much longer. It seems as if the ventilation system that was designed to keep the air breathable (and must have been working on previous visits) was turned off, whether broken or to save money I can only guess, but either way this is unacceptable. The first night I figured it could be a fluke - maybe they just shocked the pool or some other temporary reason it was so strong, so we let the kids play for a few hours the next morning, afterall the main reason we chose this hotel. MISTAKE! Our kids felt terrible and complained the rest of the day. Not only that, they woke up 2 days later at home with severe sore throats and coughing up a lot of mucus. It is obvious that breathing this much chlorine did damage to my kids' lungs!! We will not be back, at least without positive confirmation this has been fixed. Keeping 2 stars because other than the pool the hotel is fine, comfortable, and clean, typical Holiday Inn Express. Removing 3 stars because this hotel is a HEALTH SAFETY HAZARD. I don't care if the pool is managed by the Holiday Inn Vacation property adjacent to this one, it's still a Holiday Inn problem! Fix it!! Until then, we will find another place to stay while in Gatlinburg.

Basic hotel with a good central location….we arrived at the desk at 3:56p. Attendant had just finished “getting into it” with a guest and when ready for us, we were told our room wasn’t ready. We replied with “Really?”….not in a rude way, just shocked…..with a reply of, “ well, check in isn’t for 4 minutes “. I could see if we were hours early, but 4 minutes?? A little nuisance, no biggie….but each time passing the front desk that evening there was clear drama between guests and whoever was at the front. Based on the interaction, didn’t seem like guests were a priority.

The Holiday Inn Express Downtown Gatlinburg was, as always, a great stay. They even allowed us a late checkout at noon, just in case we needed it. The room was clean and fresh, and the overall hotel felt well-maintained. Breakfast was the standard fare you’d expect from a hotel, and the clerks were very friendly, offering helpful tips and suggestions about the area. My only ongoing concern is something I’ve noticed over the past six years: the staff doesn’t seem to consistently review the notes attached to reservations. In previous years, I assumed the notes weren’t transferring properly when reservations were made online. This year, however, I called ahead to confirm and was told the notes had not carried over. I asked the clerk to add a note requesting extra towels, washcloths, and toilet paper in our room before arrival. He assured me it would be taken care of, but when we checked in, we only had the standard supply and had to request more from and retrieve them from the desk. It’s not a major issue, but a little extra attention to detail would go a long way. Another point worth mentioning is the “Amenity Fee.” Online, it’s described as a pool fee, but on the bill, it appears as a “Destination Fee.” Guests are required to initial on the registration card to acknowledge it, and it’s explained as covering amenities such as the pool and breakfast. While I understand the concept, I feel the fee has become quite high. When I first started staying here six years ago, it was $4.95 per day; now it’s $15.00 per day plus taxes. I’ve overlooked this increase in the past because of the hotel’s quality and staff, but I do hope it doesn’t continue to rise.

The hotel was a nice enough place to stay. That wasn’t the problem. Our room was on the 2nd floor by the elevators (guess we should have found that out first…our bad. Anyway, the night we got there, the hallway was noisy late at night at around 11:00 with the sound of loud adults and even louder children. That didn’t bother us too badly because we were up late anyway. However, the next morning, we were awoken out of our deep sleep at 7:00 a.m. by, once again, the sound of loud adults and even louder children, who this time were crying and screaming. Not good at all. We were upset, to say the least. When we checked out, they asked us if we enjoyed our stay, we told them about this experience. I would HIGHLY suggest putting families on separate floors from older adults, which we are. Would not stay there again, unless this changed somehow.
