"Unique. Both the good and bad"

We just completed our fourth visit to this hotel. Some people will not accept.... but we accept the shortcomings. This Historic Hotel is in fact the old Kona Hilton. Built in 1968. It was the first Resort Hotel on the west side of the island. It has been renovated several times since then in fact one of the three towers is currently under renovation although to be honest there are times at certain locations on the property where you're feeling your back in 1968 . Some might say the rooms are just too " basic" for a resort. I would call them they adequate. Beds, however, leave a bit to be desired. Also such a hotel should provide a microwave oven. What makes it alluring, is the location. Beautiful views from the saltwater pool as the waves break over the lava rocks. Especially interesting is a lagoon and a small Beach carved out of the lava rock. It's possible, on-site, to swim with fish . And while I'm talking about fish, Don's MiThai restaurant also excels. Good meals, plentiful portions and by Hawaiian standards reasonable prices. Enjoyable entertainment many nights. Historic paintings and photographs adorn the lobby. We've always found employees helpful and friendly. Despite shortcomings and a little tattered around the edges, if we return to the Big Island we will stay at the Royal Kona.

"Disappointing hotel with a lovely view"

The Royal Kona Resort never did respond to my transfer request so we used a taxi from the airport instead. Two of the four receptionists that we interacted with during our stay were real miseries. When we eventually got our keys on check in, they forgot to include vouchers for some free drinks that were offered as part of the benefits of the compulsory resort fees. The room itself was large but drab and gloomy with insufficient lighting. The bathroom was not clean. There were other peoples' hairs present there. Throughout most of our stay, one of the two lifts in our wing was out of action. At night, the room was noisy and there was far too much light pollution admitted through the slatted roller blinds. The bar and restaurant, in contrast, was pleasant with cheerful staff and a nice sea view. The only saving grace of the place. Overall, not worth the money and we will not return.

"MCM Hawaiian Style, The Best!"

We really liked this resort. It’s a beautifully designed hotel that has maintained its MCM style, which we appreciated. Husband is an architect and loved the details preserved. Our room was ocean front and the views were incredible. We loved the bar and restaurant. Every employee was genuinely friendly and caring. Shout out to Autumn the bartender! We only hope they restore the original Don the Beachcomber restaurant. We looked at previous photos and it was incredible! It’s worth restoring this restaurant.

"Amazing views"

We had a room on the ground floor with an amazing patio right on the water. The resort is a bit older and in need of some work. All of the staff was very friendly and helpful. Our biggest complaint was the housekeeping doing the bare minimum to say they were in the room. One day our bed wasn't made and we never had enough towels and wash clothes. I thought the price was high also. The views, location, and friendly staff make up for the short cummings.

"Disappointing, not recommended,"

Beautiful location, nicely landscaped hotel that is decaying with bad management. We booked on expedia which turned out to be more than booking direct, we upgraded to ocean front, paid $25 for parking and lot was full, room was unfinished with one chair no tv or internet instructions, no resort info, no room service menu. One restaurant, bar closed, servicepoor as grossly understaffed. People going to resto for coffe as run out inroom and lobby. Few servers performing all roles so resto half emty but half to wait. Food served luke warm as long distance from kitchen to resto and overstressed servers don’t pick up quickly. Has nothing going for it except location. Very poor value for price. Basically paying for photo ops.
