Description

Welcome to Hadestown, where a song can change your fate. This acclaimed new musical by celebrated singer-songwriter Anaïs Mitchell and innovative director Rachel Chavkin (Natasha, Pierre, & The Great Comet of 1812) is a love story for today… and always.

Hadestown intertwines two mythic tales—that of young dreamers Orpheus and Eurydice and that of King Hades and his wife Persephone—as it invites you on a hell-raising journey to the underworld and back. Mitchell’s beguiling melodies and Chavkin’s poetic imagination pit industry against nature, doubt against faith, and fear against love. Performed by a vibrant ensemble of actors, dancers, and singers, Hadestown is a haunting and hopeful theatrical experience that grabs you and never lets go.

This show is approximately 2 hours and 25 minutes, including intermission. Recommended for ages 8 and up. Children under the age of 4 are not permitted in the theatre.

Saw Hadestown in London and I wanna give a special thank you to Lyric Theatre for having the most uncomfortable seats I've experienced in a London show. My back was spasming by the end. There was so many issues with the show. As others have said, the narrator is unintelligible, I couldn't understand most of what she was singing or saying. Apparently the greatest song every written, the song that will bring Spring back and change the world consists of 95% saying " Fa la la la la la" and sounds suspiciously like a poor man's rendering of Kiss from a Rose. The lighting was set up to blind the audience. Also why is Hades building cars and other manufacturing in hell? Because he misses Persephone? Yes I miss my wife so I go and build cars and mistreat people 🙄 The actor playing Orpheus is dreadful. His voice and singing are screechy and despite claiming he'd do anything for his love, what he actually means is getting beaten up and being ineffectual.

Absolutely hated this show. Couldn't wait for it to end. No memorable music and the storyline line is muddled. Someone offered me tix to see again and there is no way I would or could sit through this show a second time.

The worst musical I have ever seen. Clever technical staging, but that is abkut it. The narator was unintelligable, we only got about 10% of the words from all the cast due to bad diction. No idea how Euridyce dies, and why did she come back to life at the end ?

This was one of the best shows I've seen. It was an absolute pleasure from start to finish and I'd highly recommend anyone to see it, you won't be disappointed! The cast are incredibly talented, there is such a great energy coming from the stage, you can almost feel electricity making your skin tingle. Quite honestly, it was perfect. What a production. This was our first time going to see it, it was a birthday present for my daughter. We had a wonderful time. The Lyric theatre was comfortable, the staff were friendly, welcoming and helpful. We waited outside the stage door for autographs too and the actors couldn't have been nicer. It's been hours and I've still got a smile on my face. Excellent show.

I couldn't wait for this to end! Sorry this was boring and drab. The costumes looked poor, the singer who narrated was not clear and we couldn’t understand what she was saying, Orpheus and lead girl (so bad i can’t even remember her name) had no charisma, the dancing looked amateur, I could go on! Only small highlights were Hades, who had a very commanding voice and his wife who had a fantastic voice and lots of personality. She seemed to be the only one making any real effort! If you really want to see if I would advise waiting for a national tour and seeing it locally for less money than at the Lyric, or an am dram production. I am so upset I wasted £200 on this.
