Trumbull and Porter is instantly recognizable as a unique experience when you walk in the door. Austin at the front desk was extremely friendly, and the decor of the lobby is easily something you could spend an hour enjoying on its own. The rooms carry this style forward with extremely comfortable beds, and I left the next morning feeling physically and mentally refreshed. Very different experience from a typical name brand hotel that I'll definitely check into again if I need!

"Avoid at All Costs – Overpriced, Understaffed, and Completely Unresponsive"
TripAdvisor user rating 1.0 out of 5

I stayed at the Trumbull and Porter Hotel for three nights and not once was my room serviced—despite asking the front desk every single morning for housekeeping. No fresh towels, no trash removal, nothing. Just empty promises from a staff that was visibly overwhelmed and untrained. When I checked in, the employee helping me was nearly in tears from stress. That should have been the first red flag. To make matters worse, room rates were jacked up to over $600 a night due to a conference in town—completely unjustifiable given the absolute lack of service or basic amenities. The air conditioning unit in my room sounded like it was on the verge of combustion—loud, rattling, and impossible to sleep through. I wrote to the manager about these issues after my stay and received no reply. Not even the courtesy of an acknowledgment. Clearly, management is just as indifferent as the staff on the ground. This place is a disaster—overpriced, neglected, and utterly mismanaged. Save yourself the headache and stay literally anywhere else. I will never be back.

"Would Not Recommend - 1 sleepless night in a dirty and hot (77F) room that supposedly has AC"
TripAdvisor user rating 1.0 out of 5
Reviewed June 23, 2025
Booked 2 nights and only stayed 1. We would have checked out without even staying the first night but it was late when we arrived and my child fell asleep so moving hotels wasn't an option. The room was dirty, the amenities were janky, and the air conditioning was wholly insufficient. There's a heat wave happening right now and even after the AC ran in our room for several hours, the room temperature was still 77F, which is too hot to comfortably sleep. The hotel service person came over to inspect the AC system and said that there was nothing to be done, it's just the way it is. With no fan and a hot room, I was so uncomfortable and got little sleep. I don't know how this hotel gets so many positive reviews. Even if the AC was working, the room is lackluster at best. It's not clean and it's not comfortable. The bathroom floor was dirty. No one wants to see the grime and dirt that was on the floor. It's just gross and shows both a lack of detail and a lack of standards. I'm all for not having carpet in a hotel room, but the upside of having flooring that isn't carpet is the ease of cleaning it. So clean the floors, people! The blackout shade barely covered the window so it was barely functional with tons of light leakage, in addition to looking cheap. The room design and vibe is giving "college dorm with zero budget." I would not recommend this hotel to anyone and we left in the morning as soon as we could. I spoke to the front desk attendant about our issues and why we were leaving early. Hopefully I will get a refund for both nights because it was just awful.

"1 out of 10 — Unsafe, Unprofessional, and Completely Negligent"
TripAdvisor user rating 1.0 out of 5
Reviewed May 27, 2025
I stayed at the Trumbull and Porter Hotel in Detroit from May 24-26, 2025, and it was an absolute nightmare. The hotel room had no carpeting — just bare, cold concrete floors — and a dangerously slippery bathtub with no anti-slip mat, textured surface, or safety handle. Earlier in the day, my guest slipped in the same shower, and later that evening, I fell, hit my head on the glass shower partition, lost consciousness, and severely sliced my toe. When I called the front desk for help, their response was laughable and infuriating — they gave me two tiny band-aids, a single alcohol wipe, and hand sanitizer, and made me come downstairs to get it myself while injured and bleeding. To make matters worse, they admitted there was no first aid kit in the entire hotel, which is a serious safety violation. One front desk worker even responded, “that’s cool” when I explained I’d fallen, hit my head, and lost consciousness in their room. I missed a concert I paid over $1,000 for because of this injury. I also asked for clean towels and new sheets after bleeding on the ones in my room — they gave me towels, took my number promising to follow up with clean sheets, and never did. When I checked again hours later, they said the maids would handle it in the morning — yet I was checking out at 11 a.m. I reported this to hotel management and requested a refund, but was completely dismissed. I’ve since filed a formal complaint with the Michigan Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Division. Bottom line: this hotel is unsafe, unprofessional, and has zero regard for guest safety or basic hospitality. Do yourself a favor — stay anywhere else
