I spent a lot of time researching hotels in Chicago for our 4th of July couples getaway—no kids, just a relaxing long weekend. After comparing several options, we chose the Royal Sonesta primarily for the location and river views, and I want to start with the positives. The Good: The location is truly ideal. It's right on the river, walkable to just about everything downtown, and we paid the extra $30 for a high-floor river view. Totally worth it—we were placed on the top floor, and the view was stunning, especially at night. The hotel itself is modern and fairly updated. While the renovations felt like a quicker refresh rather than a full overhaul, the aesthetic was clean and contemporary. And the bed was comfortable after long days of walking. The Not-So-Good: Unfortunately, there were some drawbacks that impacted the overall experience. First and foremost, noise. If your room is near the elevators, be prepared—it’s loud. Every time the elevator moves, it makes a banging noise that’s hard to ignore. We asked to be moved and the staff accommodated us, but the new room was still adjacent to the elevator (just on the other side). We managed by keeping the bathroom door closed and it quieted down later at night, but it was still frustrating. The surrounding area can also feel a bit sketchy at night. On our last night, some people set off full-blown aerial fireworks at 4:30AM right outside the hotel—so loud they echoed through the city. This went on for nearly half an hour. No sign of hotel staff involvement or police response, which was disappointing, although I understand the city was stretched thin that weekend. Another issue: ride-sharing access was surprisingly inconvenient. During the NASCAR weekend, we couldn’t get an Uber or Lyft to pick us up directly at the hotel. We had to cross the street to Trump Tower to get picked up—which seems odd given the hotel wasn’t that close to the event areas. Lastly, the AC left a lot to be desired. Set to 67°F, but the room never dropped below 74°F. It was manageable, but definitely not ideal—especially at night. From what I’ve read, this seems to be a known issue especially on the upper floors. Bottom Line: Our stay was fine, and the view was beautiful. But between the noise, inconsistent AC, and general inconveniences, I wouldn’t choose to stay here again on a return trip to Chicago.
