"Accused of Lying by Front Desk—Unacceptable"
TripAdvisor user rating 1.0 out of 5
Reviewed December 09, 2025 NEW
I stayed at the Hampton Inn Center City–Convention Center while attending the American Society of Cell Biology Conference 2025 at the Pennsylvania Convention Center. The location was extremely convenient, and overall the room was clean and well maintained. Housekeeping did an excellent job. Unfortunately, my experience with the front desk was very disappointing. I needed a little additional time to check out because I was preparing for my presentation on Sunday at noon. I called the front desk twice before my checkout time, but no one answered. When I called a third time, the front desk agent finally picked up and immediately told me I “should have called sooner.” When I explained that I had, she accused me of lying and said the phone never rang. I was shocked by the lack of professionalism. I attempted to speak with the manager on my way out, but he also responded with attitude rather than concern. This level of customer service is unacceptable and not what I expect from a Hampton Inn.

Horrible parking. Have to drive around the block many times to wait for the 3 valet spots. No other options were available. Would not recommend this hotel.

I went to check in after three. Stepped into the hotel and found a long line - I would have checked in online but the Hilton app wasn’t working. I stood in the line for 45 minutes, finally checking in. Or tried to. The woman working the front desk said the room I paid for wasn’t ready. I had reserved a king suite and was offered two queens. I told her no, I would wait until the room was ready. Told I could check back in an hour. I specifically asked if I would have to wait in the line again when I came back, and was told no. That they would find me. Ok…so i left, walked over to reading market, grabbed something to eat. I came back to find the line longer than before and the same woman at the desk. I walked up to the counter to see if my room was ready and was told I had to go to the back of the line. I reminded her she had said I didn’t have to, and the manager (who I believe was the only person working the front desk) said that memory was incorrect. Ok. Again. Fine. I waited in the line for at least half an hour. Finally got my key, went up to my room. And found it was two queens and not what I had reserved. Went back down to the front desk. Tried to tell her (because, again, still the same person) The Front Desk was still super busy. I was told to go back up to the room and she would call me once they had a minute. I found this highly suspicious - especially after I sat around the room for 45 minutes without a phone call. Went back down to the desk. The woman said I had arrived just in time and would I please remind her of my room number. It was at this point I was told they didn’t have any of the rooms I had originally booked, and in fact were overbooked for the night. Soooo I decided to cancel my stay and check out. I don’t know if it was understaffed on this particular day, or if it’s always like this. Either way, I won’t be back.

"Worst experience"

Wow, this is by far the worst Hilton brand Hampton Inn I have ever stayed. 1) From the moment of entry, I didn't feel welcome. The lobby was full with college kids traveling with their coach. Staffs were taking care of them for a while, leaving other customers waiting and waiting. Finally, one staff made an executive decision to take care all the college crews by himself so the other staff can take care the general customers. I requested a digital key, but the key never delivered to my app. I mentioned that upon check-in, the staff just said: you need to come to the front desk anyway. She handed me 2 card keys, I asked to activate the digital key, she just pointed at the card keys. That has never happened before. There were times the digital key was not available when I arrived, but it always got activated at the check in desk. I asked for the bottle water for Hilton Honor Member, and was told in a rude attitude that it's only available for gold member and above. That is not true either, I always get bottled water as a Silver member. She called the next customer before I can show her my silver membership benefit list. 2) The floor decor is depressing. My husband usually doesn't notice anything, even he commented the hallway floor carpet looks terrible (like the scraped floor). 3) The room has a weird smell, I had to use my airfresher to clean a bit. 4) Even on the 11th floor, you can still hear the traffic from the street. I will not stay here ever again.

My second time here and the second time around was just as good as the first. Struck again by how genuinely friendly everyone was - special shout out to the awesome bartender! Rooms refreshed (I think) since last year and feel quite upmarket for a Hampton, though the new “smart tv” interface from Hilton is unreliable. No worries, as the engineer from the hotel came and removed it for me, so that I could use the (regular) tv directly! Parking lots nearby all use spothero, so save your cash on valet and book directly. Fabulous Chinese restaurants nearby and easy access to the interstate. Will stay again!
