Description

from Waimea Canyon & Fern Grotto Tour - Kauai
A visit to both sides of the island is a study in contrasts. You’ll see how the walls of Waimea Canyon, formed over thousands of years by volcanic activity and erosion, play against the dense, emerald green foliage found in so many other regions of Kauai.

Seeing Kauai’s most beautiful spots in person will demonstrate why this island is known as “The Garden Isle”. During your all-day tour, the lush vegetation covering all altitudes will surround you: from towering Eucalyptus trees projecting from the 3,500-foot cliffs to the deep valleys and fern-covered grottos.

In stark contrast to all of Kauai’s lushness is Waimea Canyon State Park. Over thousands of years, earthquakes and erosion have created dramatic variation in the landscape. Waimea Canyon, “The Grand Canyon of the Pacific” is one of the showpieces on the tour and offers one of the best views of the western coast of the island.

On the eastern side of the island, you’ll take a boat cruise down the Wailua River. In the midst of the intensely green landscape, you’ll find the Fern Grotto, draped in tropical ferns.

I was here 40 years ago and so we took the boat tour to come back and see if it was still as amazing as I remembered it. short boat trip but the fern grotto hasn't seemed to change. My problem was that my battery in the camera died and I left the spare in the car. I do have slides of the grotto from before but it is not as nice as to have them digital.

We visited the Fern Grotto with Smith's Fern Grotto Tours. It's a gentle boat ride down the river to the grotto. On the way you are given information on the geography & history. On the way back there is music and dancing by the Smith family. It is unfortunate you can no longer actually go into the grotto itself (some woman sued back in 2006 because of falling rocks) but it is still a worthwhile tour. If you prefer, you can rent kayaks for a DIY tour.

They have had to shorten the tour because of a lawsuit some years ago (this is what the tour guide told us). You take a boat ride there, then a short walk to a large wooden platform. Then back to the boat. It was pretty, but disappointing since we got to see a lot more of it during our visit 20 years ago.

"Still lush, after 36 years"

We had not returned to the Fern Grotto for 36 years, and with so many visitors, pollution, etc, did not know if we would still find it beautiful. We went upriver with the Smith boats--a family business that has been on the Wailua River for years and happily discounts seniors and special needs. It's a short walk from the pier to the grotto. And, yes, the grotto is still enchanting with its little waterfall, misty ambiance, and a little music and dance from the Smiths.
