Like many Americans of my generation, I admit I had forgotten a great deal of what provoked our entry into World War II. I was definitely glad I took the tour. Although the monument has a somber tone, the history is worth the price of admission. Great way to refresh my history knowledge and pay respect to those who made the ultimate sacrifice. This is a must do when on the island.

Pearl Harbor is a functional US military installation and ID may be required. Because of this you are not allowed to take in any bags. Cameras must be removed from their cases. The national parks service operates the park. On entry their are a number of other exhibits to see at added cost. However, this is about the USS Arizona Memorial. The memorial tour is a 75 minute program consisting of induction and a film in the theatre with historical imagery. After the film, you make your way to the dock and board the launch that then takes you out to the memorial where you will spend 15 minutes at the memorial. It must be remembered that the remains of the ship you look at is the final resting place of over 900 serving military personnel killed on that fateful day A visit to the memorial is simply a moving experience. You do not go their to look at a rusty hulk. Although you are allowed to take photographs, I personally could not due to the solemnity of the visit and felt as though it was a little disrespectful, but maybe that’s just me.

Getting tickets is a little crazy, there are several ways of doing it. They are free , we went in the afternoon and walked right up and got tickets. Unfortunately the weather was not great and they canceled the boat part which was very disappointing, I don’t know if I will ever be back on the island.

It is free to go to the memorial, however you can pay extra to have the audio. We went with the audio, however could have done without it. It is a must see if you’ve never been, this was my 3rd visit only because it was with somebody who had never been. It is our history and highly recommended.
