"TRULY UNHAPPY STAFF"
TripAdvisor user rating 2 out of 5

My immediate impression from the front desk staff was "officious." Then I saw another reviewer who used the same term. My experience of the staff is, that overall, they are unhappy; why, I don't know. The Palmer House is a lovely property with history galore: the huge, ornate Lobby, the Empire Room, and pictures on the walls of the many stars who have visited the Hotel over many decades. But overall, the staff was distant at best and verging on rude at worst. Very rule-bound, quoting policy at every turn to the simplest of questions. It didn't need to be this way. The room was certainly spacious enough, especially for a century-plus aged hotel. Amenities are reasonable, especially the Fitness Center, which is truly impressive. The thing we kept coming back to was, "Why are these staffers so unfriendly?" I can only speculate, but not a happy bunch for sure. Notable exceptions were the waitstaff in the Lockwood Restaurant. It seemed like once you got past the Host, things improved. Overall, though, a disappointment.

"Truly Historic"

I had stayed here forty years ago and this time was pleased to see that much has been maintained as it was then. The room was large and seemed renovWated although the bathroom wallpaper was peeling. We enjoyed walking the halls and seeing photos of famous people, many of them very young. We especially found interesting an old plaque recounting a famous dinner for General Grant (a distant relative of my wife) that took place at the hotel. The lobby, of course, is magnificent and it was fun to sit there and have a drink. There were a few drawbacks, such as an excessively long wait to check-in, no in-room coffee, a phone that didn't work, and a requested upgrade that did not materialize. It is very convenient to "Hamilton", the art museum and blue line from ORD. All in all, a very pleasant esperience.

Palmer House was a marvelous experience. The atmosphere was from another era, grand and luxurious. The staff was attentive and the room splendid. I would have liked to of had a small refrigerator available but the is a minor suggestion. Overall we loved our stay.

Great place, had a lot to do in the surrounding area so I never ran out of places to walk. There's also a few shops and restaurants attached if you don't want to explore or if you're in a pinch. Cam Newton stayed here so look out for other celebrities

We loved our room, the lobby is a gem, the food is delicious, the staff throughout provide service as one would hope to have -- we just love staying at the Palmer House. The buffet is pretty stunning and it is "fun" to relive and immerse yourself in how things were for high-end travel in earlier times. I purchased a lovely leather travel bag at the well-appointed gift shoppe.
