"The Moana brings you back in time"

I obtained a package deal on Hawaiian Airlines that basically resulted in a free flight. My larger room with a city vIew, and king bed was $400/night inc airfare. Normally the room by itself is $400/night. The Moana is the oldest hotel in Waikīkī, opening its doors in 1901. Its on the beach and across from the International Market Place (Kalakaua side). Positives: National Landmark hotel located right on the beach with a great view of Diamond Head. Big room and nice view from the lanai; Toto washlet w/ remote control; Quiet room; Harry, Peter, Marnie, Clayton & Sean the bartenders at the Beach Bar showed a lot of aloha. I love this bar bc of guys like this; Friendly staff; Negatives: Small TV; You don't need your card key to access your floor at night; Closet is in the bathroom. There is enuf room for an armoire; Shower looks like one you would find in a cheap hotel; No mouthwash; Hard to get a chair or cabana, despite paying a $37 resort fee daily. They should do 1/2 day rentals to discourage peeps from hogging the foregoing all day, and only using for a couple of hours; I ordered calamari at the Beach Bar, and it took almost one hour to arrive despite Harry asking where my food was. A Mgr took over and my food arrived, but it was lukewarm; Despite some negatives, I would stay here again in a heartbeat. The Moana is emblematic of the Aloha spirit. I felt like a mō'ī (king) here.

"Fantastic Location"

My wife and I spent a few days at the Moana Surfrider in January 2020. It is a historic hotel right on Waikiki Beach and the location is perfect. It is really the best location on Waikiki Beach and is only meters from the water. It is also just steps from restaurants, shopping and entertainment in the Waikiki district. The history at this hotel is magnificent. It has great character but it is very busy and it will not be a quiet peaceful stay. They have a wonderful veranda in the front and back with large chairs to watch the world go round. The restaurants are good but not great. The staff don’t really know the menu and couldn’t tell us what items were gluten free. We were actually told that the chef didn’t know if the bacon was gluten free or not. I would be highly surprised if that actually was the case. We stayed in the old Banyan Wing. Rooms are small in this section and there are no balconies but they are 100 years old and filled with character. We knew what we were getting and decided to stay in the smaller rooms.

"The worst SPG hotel ever"
TripAdvisor user rating 1 out of 5
Reviewed January 17, 2020 NEW
This hotel has history and I thought it is good to stay here. Therefore, I was expecting that the room is old but it was more worse than exception. The room smelled like mold and the wall was very thin. We could hear the conversation clearly from next room. I could handle with the environment. However, The worst thing is staff. Everyone is unfriendly and no one asks us to help luggage when we checked out. Also, Housekeeping staff open our room key and came in before checking out (9 A.M.) and no apologies. The staff quality is below 3 star hotel and Uber driver is more helpful than this hotel staff.

"High tea on the veranda!"
TripAdvisor user rating 5 out of 5

What a pleasant afternoon we had today.....enjoying the food, the view and the exceptional service at Westin Moana in Waikiki!!! High tea is served daily between 11:30 -14:30. I would recommend making a reservation and kindly ask for a table closest to the beach as you can admire the spectacular scenery on Waikiki beach. Definitely a special outing if you enjoy the traditional particulars of high tea.

"Great hotel but don’t expect special recognition for Platinum Marriot members. "
TripAdvisor user rating 4 out of 5
Reviewed January 16, 2020 NEW
The Moana Surfrider is one of my favorite hotels in Waikiki. It’s a beautiful plantation style hotel and the oldest hotel in Waikiki built in 1901. The location is in the heart of Waikiki on the beach which can’t be beat. Marriot Platinum members do get use of the Club Lounge and the spa. Breakfast and Happy Hour are served in the Club lounge which is right on the beach. The spa is beautiful and it also overlooks Waikiki beach. Unfortunately there are a few negatives which soured my stay as a Marriot Platinum member. The worst thing is the front desk. There is usually a line for Marriot elite members and sometimes there is nobody to help and at the most there is only one elite check-in person. If you have any questions, you inevitably wait.  At check-in, I was“upgraded” to a room with no view from the room, only a partial side ocean view from the lanai. I changed rooms to a Diamond Tower ocean view and it was much better.  Also at check-in, I was never asked if I wanted the measly 1,000 points (worth about $6) or a local gift. I had to go back and ask for it. There is no more restaurant breakfast for Platinum members. While the Club Lounge buffet is sufficient, the restaurant is a few notches above.  Marriot Platinum members still get use of the spa facilities which is very nice but the steam room wasn’t working the first day when I went.  I asked for a 4:00 pm late check-out and got a 1:00 pm late check-out.  I’ve stayed at the Sheraton Princess Kaiulani many times and the buffet breakfast is better but overall the Moana Surfrider is a much better hotel. There were many annoyances at the Moana Surfrider but it’s still hard to beat “The Grand Old Lady of Waikiki.”
