"Comfortable & Stately hotel, but they don’t like their guests"

This was my second stay at the Lucerne and there are a lot of things to like about it. Firstly, the location is great - not too busy, really interesting places to visit, close to Central Park, the underground, Beacon Theatre and lots of delis. Secondly, the rooms are lovely, really quiet, spacious and beds are very comfortable. No complaints there at all. Price was also very good – we stayed for a week and it was reasonable. But unfortunately, the Lucerne falls over on the easy stuff – such as being polite and welcoming. We arrived after a long flight from Australia at around 3am in the morning. The guy on the night shift at reception didn’t look up at us, let alone welcome us. He and others on front desk (in the evenings) had the same approach on the other nights when we returned after an evening out. It was as though we were invisible. On our arrival, he proceeded to put a large amount of money on my card, without even explaining to me that there would be an extra $400 for incidentals (that’s $650 in Aussie dollars, which is a lot). I’d transferred enough to my card to pay the account in full, but hadn’t accounted for the additional incidentals cost, which is fine, of course, but this wasn’t even explained to me. I don’t think I’m overly sensitive, but he seemed to sneer at me and told me that the card declined. I was surprised thinking that I had accounted for all of the cost of the accommodation. It was an especially poor experience on our arrival, and I’d be really disappointed if a ran a business and my staff displayed seeming contempt for their customers. On another night we had some things that we wanted to clarify with our account, and I went down to the reception to discuss – again, the same fellow, didn’t look up at me until he was good and ready, didn’t acknowledge my presence, again, invisible. I appreciate the Lucerne is a very big hotel, catering to so many different needs and demands. But how hard is it to offer a genuine smile and welcome to your guests when they arrive or look up at them when they come to the reception? To give them time and not to make them feel they are getting in the way of the more important things they need to do. A notable exception to the above was the room service staff, who were friendly and extremely polite and delightful, without exception, during our stay. I think that’s the last visit for us to the Lucerne, there are some many other options. Of course, I’m sure they don’t need us, they are always busy. But as they say, businesses go broke one customer at a time, so they might want to look at how they train their staff. It’s a shame cause it’s such a beautiful, classic hotel, but we didn’t feel particularly welcome to be quite honest.

This was the second time I have stayed at the Lucerne during the holidays. I love the vintage Christmas feel of the lobby as you walk in. The staff is fabulous.. very friendly and helpful and expedient. The value for the money is definitely worth it.. I will stay there again on my next trip to NYC!

Location excellent, hotel very clean, bed firm and comfortable, temperature controls in room easy to work. Staff, including manager and housekeeping, were very attentive and responsive to our individual requests. All the staff were pleasant and cooperative. The Nice Matin next door is very good for a drink and light fare. Some downsides: the room was small; complimentary coffee/tea in the lobby would be very welcome; only one elevator was working. Still, these shortcomings do not outweigh the hotel's fine qualities.

The Lucerne is a dated hotel that is in a terrific location. The rooms are old-fashioned with dark drapes and grandmotherly bedspreads. Some rooms are quite small and barely have enough closet space for a few items. The bed was comfortable, the pillows too big and dense for me. A room on the back is very quiet but your look out at an gly airshaft or neighboring building. If you can get a high floor facing the street, after the exterior reno is done and the scaffolding removed, then you look out on Amsterdam Ave or 79th St. The staff is helpful. The two BIG pluses are (1) that the really good Nice Matin restaurant is in the hotel building and is open for all meals, and (2) the hotel's location 1 block from the subway station on 79 and Bway, and two blocks from the fabulous Zabar's food store. Also, there are many fun and good restaurants, bakeries, ice cream places, and shops all around and close by.

I had high expectations of this hotel given the reviews I had read, but it fell short of expectations. This is a 4-star hotel, yet I was told that the "Queen" bedrooms don't come with tea and coffee making facilities, though a coffee maker was eventually sent up to the roomThe rooms, though nicely finished, look a bit dated, and there are some major shortfalls. Given it was winter, the heating had to be on, but it was too noisy to leave running overnight. The thick curtains are also for decor and don't close fully, therefore you can expect to waken up at sunrise, as the white curtains do not keep out the light well. The location is very good, however. Close to Central Park, and Line 1, as well as a Banksy mural one minute to the right of the entrance at W 79th Street (beside the Dublin House bar). Given the area, the hotel has a slightly pretentious feel. This is not warranted anywhere, by especially in a hotel that feels a bit "wannabe". Like a lot of hotels in New York, but not all, this one comes with a $20 (+ tax) facility fee which is "mandatory". This is apparently to cover use of the gym, internet, and concierge service which should be standard for a hotel at this rating. You can also avail of the "wine hour" between 4pm-5pm which this charge apparently includes. The wine consists of cheap and nasty Pinot Noir or Chardonnay served in small plastic glasses. Even with the 15% off breakfast in the adjoining restaurant (which is less than the standard NYC tipping rate), the facility fee cannot be justified. I have disputed this with the office of the Attorney General in NY as well as my credit card company. These rip-off fees do nothing more than allow hotels to claim their room rates are low. The service from the doormen and housekeepers is great, but reception leave a lot to be desired.
