Named One of the Top Ten Public Gardens in the United States by TripAdvisor! Young visitors love the Enchanted Storybook Forest, a collection of storybook playhouses based on a classic children’s story or nursery rhyme. It has fun interactive elements such as swings, climbing walls, monkey bars and more. Just for kids is the Children’s Discovery Room and the Brookgreen Detectives booklet that gives kids an adventure by following clues, making observations, sketching drawings, and even playing word games. When completed, they turn in the booklet and receive a Brookgreen Detectives sticker and prize!

Kids' also love the daily animal programs Mother Nature's Cafe, where they observe the animals as an interpreter feeds the animals a snack and the interactive Meet the Animals program. We have 'A Garden Room for Children' that stirs young imaginations with displays of plants and sculpture. There are wooded nooks to hide in, things to climb on, and sculptural animals to marvel at. There is even an elevated place for parents to sit and watch the magic of children learning as they play.

Seasonal favorite is the Butterfly House open daily April - October where hundreds of butterflies soar through the air. Tickets are $3 - adults and $2 - children in addition to garden admission for a 30-minute timed visit.

From its beginning in 1931, this non-profit outdoor museum with its majestic oaks and world-renowned sculpture it has been a place to restore your soul and renew your spirit but that’s not all. "wonderful day"
March 2015
Really informative. Started with a brief video about the gardens. We received a map and a little information from the welcome center. We chose to do a self guided tour but they offer guided tours for no additional fees. With the one day paid admission you can come back within 7 days for free. The boat tour is fun it's about 45 minutes. The "zoo" as animals of the time period. Lots to learn about slavery times. You will enjoy yourself. Sculptures were amazing.

I love that you can take 7 days on 1 admission ticket to enjoy this place. Amazing. Adult is $18. They have discounts on Groupon! I would like the Map to be a little more detailed. Matching sculptures/names. Talked to the gentleman at Welcome Center-very nice and knew a lot about the place. It was really humid there, BE SURE TO CARRY WATER WITH YOU!! The first day we toured most of the beautiful sculptures. That took about 2 hours. Second day, we went to the zoo. You can take your car from welcome center to the zoo area (you'll want to do that) although they do have shuttles that move from zoo to welcome center. The animals chickens, horse, bull, fox, owls, eagles, hawks, my daughters loved the Otters. They had a butterfly garden. $4 extra. That was about 2 hours as well. The workers are incredibly nice! They work really hard and really take pride in their work. You didn't see anyone sitting around, all working in the 104° temp!! I don't think I would be as kind as they were I didn't visit the restaurant but the bathrooms were clean and beautiful.

If visiting in the summer months during the heat of the summer, realize that your entrance ticket is good for a total of 7 days. Just hang onto it. You’ll need to show it at the gate. Once you are in, you don’t need to show it again. Maybe do things in spurts. When too hot, leave and return later or the next day. (Especially if you have kids.) Definitely hit the Welcome Center and see a very brief film on Brookgreen. It really sets the scene. Look carefully at the times of different tours and exhibits. Well worth it to try to plan to see as much as you can. During summer months there are also concerts that are covered w/ entrance fee. Take advantage of the awesome excursions & galleries. There are several areas with rest rooms. Also a restaurant on site M-F open 11-3:30 only. There are 2 other “snack” areas as well, where you can purchase drinks and basic food items. Please note- there is a designated “Picnic area” if you wish to bring your own food. No food /picnicking is allowed in the garden areas. No dogs ( unless official therapy dogs). No bikes in garden areas /paths. Allow yourself to go into “SC time” and slow down & enjoy. Great areas to just walk and enjoy. The gardens are beautiful. The sculptures truly amazing. The “zoo” has those animals that are indigenous to SC area (not lions & elephants etc). There’s so much history & beauty in this exceptional park. It’s amazing. It’s truly an art & educational experience.
